The Proper Way to Wash Your Face

For those that suffer from any type of skin condition like acne, the very first thing that experts will tell you is to wash your face correctly before you apply the medications and cosmetics.

Cleaning your face in the right way will go a long to improving your acne and will leave you feeling refreshed and beautiful. It is the single most important thing that people do everyday besides brushing their teeth. In order to get the best out of washing your face and to know how to do it properly when you have acne, we have compiled some tips below.

1. Make sure that you remove any trace of make – up or cosmetic products before you go to bed every night. Use a soft piece of cotton wool and gentle remover, as well as moisturizer to avoid damaging your skin. The best is to smear aqueous cream all over your face and remove with soft tissue or cotton wool.

2. Use water that is tepid. If the water is too hot it will cause flair ups, and excessively cold water will dry out your skin. The slight warmth will open your pores for a deeper cleansing.

3. Do not use soaps as they are not correctly pH balanced. Rather use a liquid cleanser that is not too strong, so preferably not alcohol based, as this will strip off the skin’s natural oil layer and cause dryness, which will make your sebaceous glands overactive and acne will develop.

4. Massage your face with only your middle, ring and pinky fingers. Rotate up and outwards. Too much stimulation will do more harm, so be gentle.

5. Make sure that your rinse your face very well so that all soap residue is completely removed. Any residue can clog your pores which will encourage pimples and acne.

6. When you dry your face, be sure not to rub it with your towel. Use a soft, clean towel and just pat your face gently until it is dry.

7. You should use a toner on your face after it has been washed. This will deep clean your pores and tighten them to avoid blockages. Use an alcohol free toner that is not too harsh. It should contain some fruit acids and AHA’s to improve the condition of the skin. They will prevent ingrown hairs and cause your pores to look smaller giving you a smoother skin.

8. The final step is to moisturize. Many people who suffer from acne think that they should not use a moisturizer when in fact dry skin is the main cause of acne, as your skin will over produce the sebaceous oil to combat the dryness. Use a thin, oil free moisturizer that is easily absorbed by the skin, leaving no layer behind. For a more intensive treatment you can use aloe vera oil which has anti inflammatory properties that combat acne.
